Extra.ie provide media coverage of HUGG’s first World Suicide Bereavement Remembrance Evening held on 19 November 2022.
HUGG hopes to break the stigma and silence that often follows a death by suicide, and invited their relatives and friends to say the names of those they have lost.
It comes as Ireland’s first survey of the impact of suicide on those left behind has shown that half of respondents (56%) reported poor mental wellbeing and many reported symptoms of depression (64%) and anxiety (59%), which were twice as prevalent as in the general population.
Worryingly, one in five respondents said they had some thoughts of self-harm or suicide in the two weeks prior to the survey. Poor mental wellbeing was most pronounced for young adults aged between 18 and 24.
