Loss by suicide can be a traumatic grief experience, yet research shows that men often navigate this grief differently. Despite the profound impact, men are frequently underrepresented in bereavement studies and may face unique barriers when seeking support.
At HUGG, we are committed to ensuring that no one grieves alone. To do this effectively, we need to understand the specific needs, coping mechanisms, and challenges faced by men. We are currently supporting two vital research studies aimed at improving services and support of suicide bereavement support in Ireland and the UK.
Why Join a Research Study?
By sharing your experience you aren’t just contributing to a paper; you are helping to improve future supports and services. Your input helps professionals understand:
- What stops men from reaching out for help.
- What kind of support actually works for men.
- How we can tailor services to be more accessible and effective.
Study 1: Factors Influencing the Uptake of Support
Lead Researcher: John Whitebrook (Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide) – Email john.whitebrook@research.uwl.ac.uk
This study focuses on adult men across the UK and Ireland. It seeks to identify the specific factors that encourage or discourage men from accessing support services after a suicide loss. If you have felt that existing services didn’t “fit” or if you found it difficult to take that first step, your perspective is invaluable.
Study 2: Men’s Experiences of Coping After Suicide Loss
Lead Researcher: Ben Hogan (University College Cork) Email Ben 125111063@umail.ucc.ie
This research explores the internal journey of grief. How do men cope in the weeks, months, and years following a loss? By documenting these lived experiences, UCC aims to create a clearer picture of the male grieving process, highlighting the resilience and the resources men use to move forward.
How to Participate
Both studies are currently looking for male participants who have been bereaved by suicide. Participation usually involves a confidential interview or survey, allowing you to share your experiences in a safe, controlled environment. Your privacy is paramount. All data collected is anonymized, and your involvement is entirely voluntary.

A Call to Action
If you have been affected by suicide, please consider lending your voice to this research. If you know someone who might be interested, please share this article with them. The more men we hear from, the better we can support men.
Together, we can ensure that every man bereaved by suicide has access to the support he needs and deserves.
