When a loved one dies by suicide, the impact on children and young people is profound and unique. They experience grief differently from adults, often struggling to understand complex emotions and the silence that can surround suicide loss. At HUGG, we recognise the vital need for specialised care when supporting children bereaved by suicide. Our Safe Harbour program provides a compassionate and understanding space for these young hearts.

The Unique Grief of a Child

Children often lack the vocabulary and emotional tools to process the complexities of suicide loss. They may feel confused, isolated, or even responsible. The stigma surrounding suicide can also prevent open conversation, leaving children feeling alone in their sorrow. This is why tailored support is so crucial. It helps them navigate their grief in an age-appropriate way.

What is Safe Harbour?

Safe Harbour is HUGG’s dedicated initiative focused on supporting children bereaved by suicide. We aim to create a nurturing environment where children can express their feelings, ask questions, and connect with peers who share similar experiences. This program helps to:

  • Foster Understanding: Provide age-appropriate explanations about suicide and grief.
  • Encourage Expression: Offer creative outlets for children to communicate their emotions.
  • Build Connection: Help children realise they are not alone in their grief journey.
  • Develop Coping Strategies: Equip them with tools to manage difficult feelings and memories.

Creating a Safe and Supportive Space

Our Safe Harbour program offers a gentle approach to grief support. We focus on creating a secure environment where children feel safe to explore their feelings without judgment. We understand the importance of patience and empathy. Our goal is to help them build resilience and find ways to remember their loved ones with love and acceptance.

HUGG believes that open conversations and compassionate support are key to breaking the silence around suicide loss. By supporting children bereaved by suicide, we contribute to healthier futures and help prevent the long-term impacts of unaddressed grief.
